Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery

The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery is responsible for the training of Nurses at all levels. It currently runs a number of programmes including post-basic Certificate and Diploma in Mental Health Nursing, Ophthalmic Nursing and Nursing Anaethesia; Higher Diploma in Nursing (SRN programme), Bachelor's of Science in Nursing with Honours (BSN, Hons) in Medico-Surgical Nursing, Paediatrics & Neonatal Nursing, Midwifery & Obstetrics Nursing, Oncology Nursing, Nursing Anaethesia, Nursing Education, Midwifery Education, and Critical Care Nursing.

Work is underway for the development of a bachelor's degree programme in Peri- Operative Nursing. In addition, the Faculty a number of postgraduate programmes including a Special Master's degree (MSN with thesis) in Neonatal Nursing, and Paediatrics Nursing and is currently working on the development of postgraduate curricula in Medico-Surgical Nursing, Midwifery and Obstetrics Nursing, Oncology Nursing, Anatomy & Physiology for Nurses & Midwives, Pharmacology for Nurses & Midwives and Nursing and Midwifery Education.

The Faculty currently has seven (7) departments including Medico-Surgical Nursing, Nursing & Midwifery Education, Midwifery & Obstetrics Nursing, Paediatrics & Neonatal Nursing, Specialized Nursing, Community Health Nursing, and Basic Nursing.

The requirements for admission into the Higher Diploma in Nursing is five credit at WASSSCE; C6 or Better in the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics/Further mathematics, Biology/Health Science, Chemistry, Physics/Core Science in not more than two sittings; OR Certificate in Nursing (SECHN) plus five credits at WASSCE, C6

or better in English Language, Mathematics or Further Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Health Science, and any other Science subject.

Admission into the BSN (Hons) programme is as follows:

• Level 100: Successful completion of the Pre-BSN Nursing programme; OR Second-Class lower Bachelor's degree in the Sciences

• Level 200: Five credits at WASSCE plus a Higher Diploma in Nursing

Level 300: Higher Diploma in Nursing plus any post-basic Diploma in Nursing or Midwifery

However, admission into the Pre-BSN Nursing programme is a minimum of five credits at WASSCE, a C5 or better in any four of the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics/Further Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology; and a C6 in the fifth, with a maximum aggregate of 21 in not more than two sittings.
