Faculty of Arts

This is one of the traditional faculties of the Humanities in the College. The Faculty currently has two Institutes, namely: the Institute of Gender Research and Documentation (INGRADOC) and the Institute of Educational and Extra-Mural Studies, which has two sub-divisions of Educational Studies and Extra-Mural Studies. There are three departments, namely: History and African Studies, Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Language Studies, which have five units, including an English Unit; a French Unit; a Chinese Unit - a Confucius Institute; a Linguistics Unit, and an Arabic Unit.

 The Faculty of Arts at Fourah Bay College offers diverse programs in the humanities, languages, education, and cultural studies. It provides students with a strong academic foundation in liberal arts while promoting critical thinking, research, and cultural awareness. The Faculty of Arts provides a well-rounded education that prepares students for careers in teaching, research, cultural studies, and social development. It is an ideal choice for those passionate about the humanities and liberal arts.

Degree Programs

The faculty offers Bachelor’s degrees in the following disciplines:

Bachelor of Arts (General)

Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Chinese

Bachelor of Arts in Arabic Studies

Bachelor of Arts in Gender and Development Studies

Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Care Education

Bachelor of Education in Adult Education and Community Development

Admission Criteria:

5 (five) GCE ‘O’ Level/WASSCE credits, including C5 or better in English Language, in not more than two sittings.

At least 3 (three) subjects should be in the humanities (Liberal Arts).

Diploma, Certificate, and Licentiate Courses

Certificate Programs (1 Year)

Certificate in Adult Education and Community Development

Entry: 4 GCE ‘O’ Level/WASSCE credits, including English.

Preference is given to candidates with experience in Adult Education.

Certificate in Early Childhood Education Care (ECEE)

Entry: 3 GCE ‘O’ Level/WASSCE credits, including English.

Diploma Programs (2 Years)

Diploma in Adult Education and Community Development

Entry: 4 GCE ‘O’ Level/WASSCE credits, including C6 in English.

Relevant qualifications (e.g., Teachers’ Certificate) may require an interview.

Diploma in Cultural Studies

Entry: 4 GCE ‘O’ Level/WASSCE credits, including English and History.

Candidates with relevant qualifications or cultural skills may require an interview.

Diploma in License Divinity

A two-year program for Christian Ministry training.

Entry: 4 GCE ‘O’ Level/WASSCE credits, including English and Christian Religious Knowledge.

Diploma in Gender and Development Studies

Entry: 4 GCE ‘O’ Level/WASSCE credits, including English.

Diploma in Early Childhood Education Care (ECEE)

Entry: 4 GCE ‘O’ Level/WASSCE credits, including English.
